There are few auto racing legends that are aptly titled for Halloweeen. However, in Ponoco, a developing Nissan GTP would earn the moniker: California Coffin. It all started in 1985, where Tony a2z Adamowicz had a rear suspension failure in an experimental version of the ZX Turbo. a2z came off the banking and was able to limp to the pit area without causing a lot of damage to the Nissan GTP. Later, he told me that every time he never knew which item was going to break next on the car. Brian Redman mentioned that further development of the machine might be canned. The machine’s primary sponsor was “California Cooler”, but the monster had developed a reputation as the “California Coffin”.
a2z Tony was a brave driver in the early years of engineering of this Nissan. They said the same things regarding the early designs of the famous Porsche 917K in the pre 70′s. Frightning, but both chassis required time to become the championship cars they became. Tony Adamowicz regretted not being there to benefit from all of his dangerous testing and development of the Nissan. Politics prevented him from harvesting the fruits of his development as a racer of this promising racing machine, nicknamed the California Coffin. Continue reading ‘The Nissan GTP’ »
