Gas is getting more and more expensive and if you have a long commute or if you just like to drive, the gas bill can become a burden.

Luckily there are a lot of ways to save gas without investing in a new car or in snake oil add-on kits. I’ll show you seven ways that are commonly available and easy to do.

1. MAINTAIN HIGH ENOUGH TIRE PRESSURE

Driving with under inflated tires is not only dangerous as the tires could overheat, it also uses more gas than inflated tires.

Inflate the tires to the maximum allowed by your cars manuals, and periodically check the pressure using a good pressure gauge.

Many hypermilers inflate their tires more than that, to the maximum pressure printed on the sidewalls of the tires themselves. This is often as much as 50 percent more than what the car manufacturer recommends and it will give additional gas savings due to lesser rolling resistance.

This comes at the cost of a harder more uncomfortable ride though. And I can’t recommend you outright to do this, even if it’s safe, as there is a possibility of uneven tire wear in some conditions. Continue reading ‘Improved Fuel Economy – 7 Simple Steps That Save You Gas’ »

Winter is here and where I live, in Finland, we have just had our first snow with many drivers navigating icy roads on plain summer tires. I was doing a 50 mile trip yesterday, mostly on small rural roads where the snow is not yet spoiled by salt and heavy traffic, and I thought to myself: It’s not really that dangerous or difficult to drive on slippery roads as long as you know what to do and when. You just have to adopt a different driving style and you’ll be as safe as on dry summer roads. The danger is when you apply a summer driving style to winter roads.

Rule #1: Slow Down

Don’t expect to reach the same speeds on a winter road as you do in the summer. Plan you trip to take longer and if you drive long hours in dark, limited visibility conditions up north plan some more stops to rest.

Rule #2: Be Soft on The Pedals

To keep your car on the road you need grip. When the tires have grip they roll at the speed you’re traveling and the car will go where you point the front wheels. When you break or accelerate too much the wheels will lock and lose grip. This turns your car into an object sliding in stead of rolling on the ice, you will have no control over it. It will go straight forward, or if the road is slanted it will slide off the road. Accelerate and break like you had an egg under the pedal, really softly, and you’ll have a lot more grip to play with. Continue reading ‘Driving During Winter – 7 Tips That Keeps You on the Road’ »

Car lovers would like their car to be unique. For this, it is possible to alter it for looks, speed and sound. The same rule is applicable for new hybrid market, which has seen the entry of some body kits designed for hybrids such as Toyota Prius and Honda Civic. But how does it affect the greenness of the hybrid car? Does the gas mileage and competence improve after including a body kit?

The answer depends on the type of kit you are installing. Today, the kits sold are small, chic and just include delicate designing cues. As the market grow, there is a likelihood of increasing number of extreme styles, but as of now, the kit you add won’t impact the performance of your hybrids. These body kits alter the bumpers and side skirts of the car; they are normally not put over the original. So the weight of your hybrid car doesn’t increase. Now a days due to the growth of the Internet industry, it is easier to compare cars before deciding about buying one.

Earlier people used to depend on the recommendations of their friends and relatives for deciding about buying a car. The media industry was also not very developed earlier. The only television channel at that time Doordarshan did not broadcast any program on the auto industry. Newspapers also did not cover information or news about new automobile launches. There was no magazine about the auto industry then. There was no other source of information about new cars. Before 1990 even the auto industry was not well developed and there were few options in the market. This had resulted in no competition in the market. It was bad for automobile buyers as they did not have many choices for buying cars. Continue reading ‘How to Compare Cars’ »

In order to do a new car comparison, it is important to compare apples to apples. In other words, it would be foolhardy to compare SUVs to compact cars. Any new car comparison should take similar classes of cars and look at how they stack up against each other.

Let’s take the coupe market first and compare the Volkswagen Golf, Dodge Caliber, Kia Soul Exclaim and Mazda 3S Sport. These cars are priced between $17,000 and $19,000. One difference is that the Golf has a 2.5 liter engine while the 3S Sport has only a 2 liter engine. The Exclaim Soul and Sport have significantly lower displacement than the Golf or Caliber. And, if safety is a consideration, the Kia does not have front side airbags but the other 3 do. Continue reading ‘Apple to Apple – New Car Comparison’ »

Fiberglass is usually quite a sturdy material. It is composed from plastic resin and artificial fiber. You can safeguard your fiberglass body kit against fractures and tears by reducing its direct contact to unwarranted stress. Its potency is based on the methods used by the manufacturers while molding it.

Usually, fiberglass is an excellent substance for a body kit. But it differs from metal, as it is easy to dent it and also wears out after some time, causing fractures. Professional body work experts can repair it. However there are numerous instructional kits available too. But you need to exercise caution if you plan to do it yourself. Fiberglass may cause few severe eye and skin inflammations. Also unlike metal, it may particulate, or disintegrates into its constituent fibers quite rapidly and may become very tough to manage, forget repair.
