Most people will give their car a quick clean before selling but if you spend a little extra time paying attention to areas that are usually left neglected, then potential buyers are more likely to see your car as the more desirable purchase.

1. Ensure your wheel arches are thoroughly cleaned using a degreaser or an all purpose cleaner, suitable brushes and an old wash mitt. They can then be dressed to help rejuvenate the plastic liners. Clean arches really help to give the impression of a well looked after car.

Motor Insurance figures show that teenagers and drivers in their early 20′s cause more accidents on Ireland’s roads than any other group because of their lack of experience and poor judgement when driving. This age group is also more likely to own a mobile phone, making them more likely to be tempted to use it when driving.

Studies have shown that sending a text or calling someone on a mobile phone when driving is especially common amongst younger, less experienced drivers. A recent study carried out in the United States revealed that an alarming 37 per cent of teenagers aged between 16-17 years old admitted to sending a text while driving, with more than half saying they had talked on the mobile phone when in charge of a car. At this time of year, the weather may not seem to be able to make up its mind about whether it wants to rain or shine. If it does decide to rain and you are out on the roads you need to take into account the weather conditions and tailor your driving accordingly. Heavy rainfall can lead to excess water remaining on the road surface which could make driving more hazardous. Modern roads have been designed to minimize the effects of weather conditions on driving a vehicle, but they are not able to remove the danger completely. If excess water is not able to drain away sufficiently it will remain on the road surface and could cause cars to skid or lead to aqua planning. So if you get caught out in heavy rain you need to think about the way you drive in order to minimize any potential dangers.

Firstly you should reduce your speed. Heavy rain will reduce visibility, which means it will be harder to see what is on the road in front of you. It can also reduce your stopping distance giving you less time to stop your vehicle safely if necessary. If you feel like the steering has become less responsive then you need to ease off the accelerator slowly and reduce your speed until you feel in control again. Whilst driving in these weather conditions you may find that you come across floodwater. If you do, make sure you only cross it if you are sure of how deep it is. Be aware that it would only take a small amount of water in the internal combustion chamber to cause serious harm to your engine. Crossing floodwater should be done slowly to avoid water seeping into the car and so that you do not cause bow waves. In these conditions not all roads and bridges will remain open. It is therefore advisable not to use your satellite navigation systems to guide you, as they may not be completely up to date on the latest closure. To find out what is happening on the roads in your area, you could tune into the local radio station and listen to the traffic report. Continue reading ‘Keeping Safe on Wet Roads’ »

Last week during the holiday season I had been driving home from work and it started snowing. Well, the snow began to cover the roadways and the driving conditions began to get more and more challenging as time went by.

I noticed that most people did not even consider that slowing down was an option. And as I traveled my usual route home I saw about 3 different accidents that had occurred because of the slick road conditions.

It is my belief that if each of those drivers had just slowed down they would not have had those accidents. I really don’t understand why people have to drive so fast. I swear that if I could drive 100 miles per hour, people on the roadways would still pass me because that speed would not be fast enough for them.

Every year more and more people die on the roadways for no good reason because of accidents. If people would just practice a couple of good safe driving techniques they could avoid most accidents. Continue reading ‘Two Simple Methods to Help Avoid Accidents When Driving’ »
