Malaga is a port city located in the South of Spain, on the Costa Del Sol region of the Mediterranean coast line. The cities economy now surrounds the tourist trade although originally it was a harbour in which to import and export goods. The name itself derives from the Phoenician word for salt ‘Malaka’, in which is believed to be because fish was salted near the harbour.

Architecture

Being a former Islamic Spanish stronghold the city like many of its time still shows signs of the fortification which contained the area during this period. It has a quadrangular plan in which has both an inner and outer wall, once used to protect the city from invasion. The oldest building within the city is the Roman Theatre which is thought to date back to 1st century BC. The church of Santiago is a must see as the building is a magnificent example of the gothic-mudejar hybrid in which shows a classic example of both Islamic and Christian influence.

Where to eat

The area is famous for its seafood and has numerous eateries in which offer top quality local seafood, in which is very popular with tourists visiting the city. The best restaurants can be found in the old town area of the city in which is also home to the confectioners and cake shops in which are also popular amongst those visiting with a sweet tooth. The area even has a selection of vegetarian restaurants which are few and far between in the Mediterranean!

Nightlife

The best place to go for a nights entertainment is only a few miles away in Marbella, the area is a popular destination for ‘lads holiday’ but also is home to some fine restaurants with open top terraces to have a nice relaxing drink in the evening. There is also the old town of Malaga itself which again offers high end bars in which even have sofas outside for an enjoyable evenings entertainment. There are also many beach bars which are open until late and a few clubs which means you can dance into the early hours.

If you are looking to visit Malaga you may wish to tour the area by car, there are plenty of companies who offer car hire in Malaga and indeed car hire in Spain who offer great deals.
