Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) are riding high on the success of their utility vehicles and this is probably the inspiration that drives M&M to keep innovating and provide new accessories in its already existing models. The biggest success story for Mahindra came with Scorpio. In addition the Bolero and Xylo have accelerated Mahindra to new levels of success. As of October, in 2009, the combined sales of its three models — Scorpio, Bolero and Xylo — went up to 18,410.

This gives M&M a whopping 65% share of the Indian utility vehicle market. These three vehicles have come across as one of the safest vehicles to drive with built in safety features like collapsible steering, crumple zones and ABS. M&M continues on the path of innovation and safety with the introduction of airbags in Scorpio and Xylo. Let’s have a look at how the airbags in the Scorpio and Xylo can be crucial in saving your life in an accident.

Airbags in cars provide cushioning effect during collisions by automatically inflating on impact. The design of the airbag mechanism is conceptually simple. It is made of three general components:

The airbag module

Crash Sensors &

The deployment mechanism

The airbag module includes both an inflator unit and a light weight nylon fabric airbag. Originally, airbags were installed only on the driver’s side in the steering. Eventually, airbags became standard on both the driver and passenger side to protect from impacting directly into the steering wheel or the windshield in case of an impact. The module may also contain The diagnostic unit which monitors the readiness of the air bag system and warns to repair the system in case of a failure.

Air bags are typically designed to deploy in frontal and near-frontal collisions when there is rapid deceleration of the vehicle. The airbag sensor is a MEMS accelerometer. The microscopic mechanical element moves in response to rapid deceleration, and this motion causes a change in capacitance, which is detected by the electronics on the chip, which then sends a signal to fire the airbag.

When there is a moderate to severe frontal crash that requires the frontal air bag to deploy, a signal is sent to the inflator unit within the air bag module. An igniter starts a chemical reaction, which produces a gas to fill the air bag, making the air bag deploy through the module cover.

This simple mechanism can go a long way in saving your precious life and Mahindra understands that. Mahindra has made sure that Scorpio’s and Xylo’s success never dies out by making thoughtful changes and innovations with every new variant. The introduction of Airbags is an all-important variation.

You can call it a status symbol or being adventurous or just being comfort conscious, owning a grand looking SUV has become top priority for Indians. Thanks to Indians raking in a good share of the global economy, many Indians are now in a position to invest in a huge SUV which serves not just as an ideal family car but also as the perfect recreational vehicle. Almost all major SUVs have a stronghold in Indian automobile market with more and more Indians wanting to buy an SUV. But there are three SUV’s which are at the heart of the Indian Automobile scene.

Tata Safari
Tata Safari is the stylish, indigenously manufactured SUV. The Safari Dicor comes with a 2.2L Dicor (Direct injection common rail) Engine churning out peak power of 140 PS and maximum torque of 320 Nm. Its high ground clearance variation of 4×2 and Shift-on-the-fly 4×4 engagement and high water wading levels makes it a vehicle which can take you practically any place. It has high quality interiors with a spacious cabin. It is also considered a fuel-efficient SUV despite its 2200Kg weight, a 0-100 kmph in 15.4 seconds and top speed of 156 kmph.

Ford Endeavour
Ford Endeavour comes with the signature features of great build quality and reliability of Ford Motors. At a price tag of Rs. 18 lakhs it is not the most affordable of SUVs but compared to other names like BMW, Audi and Toyota, Endeavour is the cheaper option among foreign brands. What works for Endeavour is the performance and the styling. It comes in two variants 4×2 XLT and the 4×4 Thunder+. he Thunder+ is powered by a 3.5L TDCi In-line 4 diesel engine that churns out 154 bhp. A good turning radius allows Endeavour to be highly stable at corners. Its handling is firm. Endeavour’s styling is sleek with a large, bold and sporty looking grille as well as multi-reflector headlamps. The SUV does lack aerodynamic proficiency on the highway but like an ideal SUV it handles rugged terrain like a pro. With ample cargo space, it is a comfortable vehicle for the long drives.

Mahindra Scorpio
Mahindra Scorpio is one of the highest selling SUVs in India. Since its launch in 2002 it has stayed on top to serve the SUV instinct of thousands of Indians. What makes Scorpio special for Mahindra & Mahindra is that it allowed M&M to be launched as a passenger car seller in contrast to its previous reputation as a manufacturer of Utility Vehicles meant for rural areas. Over the years M&M has managed to keep Scorpio fresh by incorporating constant technological advances in the car. In 2005 Mahindra Scorpio was the first Indian car with Common Rail Diesel Engine (CRDe). This engine technology provided for a whopping 120 bhp of power, lesser noise, lesser vibration and more fuel efficiency. This made it comparable to foreign made cars. The most striking part of Scorpio is the signature off-roading gene of Mahindra vehicles that it carries. Scorpio is the best affordable SUV for off-roading in India. The list of its attractions is long but it is remarkable for its immense road presence, great ride quality, a powerful and efficient diesel engine, comfortable seating and Hi-tech equipments. To name a few technologies, Scorpio sports Automatic Transmission, Micro Hybrid Technology, ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System), Bluetooth Connectivity, Bluevision – bulb in headlamps, Twinpod Instrument Cluster, Front Dual Airbags and much more.

Indians like to travel around with friends and family and SUVs will always have a stronghold in the Indian Automobile market. If you are an owner of a SUV or if you plan to buy one, then, HAPPY DRIVING!!!

Mahindra & Mahindra, the leader in utility vehicles in India, has taken the initiative to introduce the path breaking FuelSmart System for the first time in India. The FuelSmart system is an automatic engine start stop system. It has been introduced in its Scorpio M2DI and Bolero SLX BS3 models.

The start stop system automatically shuts down and restarts the automobile’s engine. The engine begins effortlessly once a driver depresses a clutch prior to moving ahead. This in turn reduces the duration for which the engine is kept idling, thereby improving fuel economy. This start stop system comes into play when the automobile has to spend considerable amounts of time waiting at traffic signals or in traffic jams. This feature started in hybrid electric vehicles but now has also started appearing in vehicles without a hybrid powertrain like Scorpio and Bolero. Fuel economy can improve by 5 to 10 percent in non-hybrid vehicles with the start stop system.

Off late the start stop system uses an enhanced-starter which is nothing more than a conventional starter, developed by Bosch, which can withstand the increased number of engine starts. The system is such that the alternator is not activated most of the time. Thus the electrical components in the vehicle run on Battery. The alternator is activated to recharge the battery while decelerating or braking (regenerative braking). Due to the use of regenerative braking, some have started calling this type of system a micro hybrid.

Volkswagen Polo Formel E, Fiat Regata ES and BMW were some of the earliest vehicles to use this technology. Smart Fortwo is a micro hybrid sold in Europe. Mahindra & Mahindra has introduced Micro hybrid Technology with Scorpio and Bolero. Tata Motors is following suite with Micro Hybrid Nano and Ace.

The Micro Hybrid Technology is based on the simple principle of not burning fuel when not required. The FuelSmart system with a Micro-Hybrid technology of Scorpio is new technology developed by Mahindra R&D team with help of the M/S Bosch.
