Choosing the right motorcycle helmet is not as easy as it seems. But it’s one of the most important and crucial decisions any rider could ever make. The follow tips will help you choose the right helmet too ride safely and securely.

1. In the UK, helmets need to conform to ECE 22.05 minimum standard. This standard involves specific impact and collision criteria. These helmets that conform can survive a single impact on five points or sections of the helmet.
2. That means the helmet itself stands the test of an impact, which usually will mean that the rider and passenger wearing them will also end up safe in a crash.
3. There are other significant considerations. Even if a helmet is safety tested, it needs to fit correctly. The head size needs to be measured properly with a tape measure.
4. If a helmet is too loose, it won’t protect nearly as well. An excellent helmet will fit like a second skin around the skull. Also, if the helmet is too tight, the wearer won’t be comfortable. It could obstruct there vision as well.
5. Strong straps and clasps need to be connected to the helmet at a minimum. Even better are double ring fasteners that loop through each ring. This tight connection will better protect a passenger or driver in case of a fall or crash, for it’s not nearly as likely to pop off.
6. A bright colour is the best way to go. It’s wise to select red, white, orange or yellow as first choices. Reflective tape attached to the helmet will offer even more visibility to other motorists, especially at night.
7. The helmet should be in impeccable condition. This means it shouldn’t have any cracks, loose padding, or exposed metal surfaces.
8. The best ones have face guards, rather than just wrapping around the top of the head like a bicycle helmet.
9. Whether the motorcycle helmet is manufactured of fibreglass or polycarbonate is a decision that’s up to the individual rider. Both are extremely hard materials and very protective against impacts. But fibreglass helmets usually will last longer, about five years with regular use. Polycarbonate ones are often only durable enough for three years.
