A new Mahindra Xylo was launched today. Mr. Vivek Nayer, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Automotive Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd announced the launch. The New Xylo D2 has a mDI CRDe engine which will offer the best of both worlds to the consumer, the DI as well as the newer CRDe Tech. This new 2.5L engine will give an increased fuel efficiency of 13 km/l in the city coupled with the Xylo’s earlier space and comfort would make it a much better option for long distance commuters.

The new Xylo will also be cheaper to maintain and the costs of spares has also been visibly reduced. Another feature that is impressive is that the Xylo is within the BS III emission norms and as a result has lower emissions and NVH levels. In spite of this the D2 offers 95Bhp 22 kg/m of torque. The Top mounted Intercoolers will kick in when a burst of power is requiring finding the right balance between fuel economy and drivability scores.

Apart from this the Xylo comes with surround cool dual Auto air conditioning ensuring overall cooling for all the passengers. Apart from that is the spacious 3rd row leg room and the driver seat height adjustability. Other features include power steering and an added security system in the car is an engine immobilizer that won’t start the car without the right key making it theft proof.

On the looks front the Mahindra signature grill adorns the front. The car retains its overall masculine feel. The body side is clad with chrome rails. The back has rear lamp clusters. Stylish clear lens headlamps add to the cars cool quotient. The car is currently available In 3 new exciting colors which are gold shimmer, mist silver and fiery Black.

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) are riding high on the success of their utility vehicles and this is probably the inspiration that drives M&M to keep innovating and provide new accessories in its already existing models. The biggest success story for Mahindra came with Scorpio. In addition the Bolero and Xylo have accelerated Mahindra to new levels of success. As of October, in 2009, the combined sales of its three models — Scorpio, Bolero and Xylo — went up to 18,410.

This gives M&M a whopping 65% share of the Indian utility vehicle market. These three vehicles have come across as one of the safest vehicles to drive with built in safety features like collapsible steering, crumple zones and ABS. M&M continues on the path of innovation and safety with the introduction of airbags in Scorpio and Xylo. Let’s have a look at how the airbags in the Scorpio and Xylo can be crucial in saving your life in an accident.

Airbags in cars provide cushioning effect during collisions by automatically inflating on impact. The design of the airbag mechanism is conceptually simple. It is made of three general components:

The airbag module

Crash Sensors &

The deployment mechanism

The airbag module includes both an inflator unit and a light weight nylon fabric airbag. Originally, airbags were installed only on the driver’s side in the steering. Eventually, airbags became standard on both the driver and passenger side to protect from impacting directly into the steering wheel or the windshield in case of an impact. The module may also contain The diagnostic unit which monitors the readiness of the air bag system and warns to repair the system in case of a failure.

Air bags are typically designed to deploy in frontal and near-frontal collisions when there is rapid deceleration of the vehicle. The airbag sensor is a MEMS accelerometer. The microscopic mechanical element moves in response to rapid deceleration, and this motion causes a change in capacitance, which is detected by the electronics on the chip, which then sends a signal to fire the airbag.

When there is a moderate to severe frontal crash that requires the frontal air bag to deploy, a signal is sent to the inflator unit within the air bag module. An igniter starts a chemical reaction, which produces a gas to fill the air bag, making the air bag deploy through the module cover.

This simple mechanism can go a long way in saving your precious life and Mahindra understands that. Mahindra has made sure that Scorpio’s and Xylo’s success never dies out by making thoughtful changes and innovations with every new variant. The introduction of Airbags is an all-important variation.

Mahindra Xylo, the vehicle that has taken the MPV market by storm since its launch, comes packed with the most modern technological breakthroughs. After offering features like the mEagle engine developed on the NEF CRDe platform, the Engine Immobiliser that makes the car theft resistant, The ultrasonic sensors embedded in the rear of the car that assist reverse parking, the digital drive assist system that downloads all kinds of drive related information to you on the fly, the Xylo now offers the ABS Brakes or Anti-Lock Braking System which improves the vehicle’s stability by preventing the wheels from locking when brakes are applied on any skid-prone surface (snow, water, loose gravel, or even oil).

The basic function of ABS Brakes is to prevent the wheels on a vehicle from locking while braking. The advantage of a rotating wheel is that it allows steering control even under heavy braking by preventing skid of the wheel and allowing it to tractively interact with the road surface all the time.

ABS Brakes Operation

Typical ABS Brakes or Anti-Lock Braking System is composed of three components:

Electronic Control Unit

Wheel Speed Sensors

Two or more Hydraulic Valves within the brake hydraulics.

The Control Unit constantly monitors the speed sensors. It is meant to detect decelerations that are unusual. There will be rapid deceleration in the wheel right before it locks up. The wheel that locks up could stop spinning instantaneously Without ABS Brakes.

On the other hand, in a vehicle with ABS Brakes, the ABS controller understands that such rapid deceleration is impossible. So, it reduces the pressure to the brake until acceleration is detected, then it increases the pressure until a deceleration is detected again. It can do this at a very fast rate, before the tire can actually significantly change speed. This eventually leads to the tire to slow down at the same rate as the car, with the brakes keeping the car on the threshold of a lock-up. This gives the system maximum braking power.

Brake Pedal “Pulsation” is normal during the operation of ABS Brakes. The driver is required to keep the pressure on the brake pedal hard enough even under the pulsations. The pulsations may be quite violent, but this is normal. In an emergency stop in a car with ABS Brakes, the driver should apply the brake firmly and hold it while ABS does its work.

ABS Brakes have been introduced in the higher end model of Mahindra Xylo, the E8, on basis of customer feedback and suggestions. Depending on the demand, this feature may be introduced in other variants of Xylo too.

ABS Brakes makes Xylo an even safer vehicle to drive.
